The Notebook

Corey's 'Othermother'

Produced by Benjamin Herold; photos by Harvey Finkle

“From day one,” says Robin White of her son’s all-time favorite teacher, “Ms. Bell just felt like family.” On April 25, The Notebook was there as Corey, his mother, and Donna Bell-Koon reunited to share their memories and insights about the teacher’s impact on Corey.

Ben, what a great piece! I think you did a wonderful job of intertwining the historical roots of "othermothering" in the piece. It's nice to see and hear positive stories like this and I think it will be very encouraging to both teachers and students.

This piece is very inspiring in that I am a "step" mother to two teen boys. We really are on a different level though. I'm only seven years their senior, but they exhibit such a respect and love that I sometimes forget how young I am :). I am happy to be an "other mother". Their mother and I are very close and have a great friendship. It is a unique situation because you don't find that too much in today's society; people getting along and co-parenting, much less friends. Thanks for doing this piece.
