Clarification
The Fall 2006 Public School Notebook contained a chart about School District contractors titled “Contractors with more than $1 million in work during 2005-06 school year.” The dollar totals in the chart were drawn from a review of all of the hundreds of resolutions approved by the School Reform Commission.
We regret that the chart lacked adequate explanation, and for a number of reasons, the chart did not accurately represent the total contracting dollars received from the School District by some of the contractors listed.
The figures shown were based on SRC resolutions that generally authorize a maximum dollar amount for each contract. But in some cases, contractors do not ultimately receive the full amount authorized.
The figures presented were for the 2005-06 school year, but several contracts extended into more than one school year. Some inaccuracies occurred in classifying contract dollars to the appropriate school year.
The chart did note that for a number of nonprofit organizations, a substantial portion of the funds shown from some School District contracts may be dollars “passed through” in the form of stipends or scholarships to students or other program participants. It should have also been noted that in some cases, nonprofit organizations play the role of fiscal agent in order to pass money through to another organization or project.
Due to the
complexity of accounting for the actual
flow of funds on the dozens of contracts
reflected in the chart, the Notebook
is not publishing a corrected chart.
