Details of the budget crisis
- The District expects to end this school year with a $37 million deficit.
- $99 million in cuts are planned for 2007-08; 250 or more teacher positions will be lost in the coming year.
- The District is looking for $55 million in additional funds from the state, $27.6 million from the city to balance its books.
- A new five-year financial plan projects 22 school closings in 2008-2010.
- The student/teacher ratio is higher than it was in 2002; the teachers’ union says 198 classes are oversized.
