Facts about city funding for schools
- The city contributes just under a third of the total School District budget, significantly less than the state’s share, which is just over half.
- The city’s contribution to the School District budget is authorized every spring by City Council.
- The major source of city funds is the local property tax. Other sources include the business use and occupancy tax, the liquor-by-the-drink tax, the school non-business income tax, and an annual city grant.
- The city contribution for schools has been growing at an average rate of 4 to 5 percent a year since 2000.
- The School District is currently requesting what amounts to a 6 percent increase in city aid through an increased share of property taxes and through payments to cover some of the District’s payroll and facilities costs.
