Who’s working on school funding

Here’s a run-down of groups in Philadelphia working to improve funding for public education, and how to get in touch by phone.

• ACORN: Working in low-income communities to train parents as activists in organizing for equitable distribution of education resources. 215-765-0042.
• Education Law Center: Working with students to document through photography the impact of school funding inequity. Collaborating with Good Schools Pennsylvania and Education Policy Leadership Center to raise awareness of the pending costing-out study, and to call for an independent commission to oversee implementation of a sound school funding formula. 215-238-6970.
• Eastern Pennsylvania Organizing Project (EPOP): Working with faith-based communities to train and educate parents about school funding issues and to advocate in Harrisburg for more education funding and a better state funding formula. 215-634-8922.
• Good Schools Pennsylvania: Working with Education Law Center (see above) and working statewide to expand the network of citizens who are informed and mobilized in support of equitable school funding. 215-332-2700.
• Parents United for Better Schools, Inc.: Mobilizing public school families to support increased city and state funding for Philadelphia schools through measures such as the Goode bill in City Council. 215-844-5525.
• Parents United for Public Education: Bringing together parents to promote fiscal transparency, a public process, and parent voice in budget decisions, and setting priorities that place children and classrooms first. 215-808-1400 or 215-236-2100.
• Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth: Supporting the Goode bill in City Council to allocate more city revenues to the School District; working with Pennsylvania state legislators to support state financing of public education and increased funding for pre-K and dropout prevention. 215-563-5848.
• Philadelphia Home and School Council: Mobilizing public school families to support increased city and state funding for Philadelphia schools through measures such as the Goode bill in City Council. 215-400-4080.
• Philadelphia Education Fund: Advocating for increased city support for the School District; educating state legislators from the Philadelphia region about strategies to improve the state’s funding system; educating local education stakeholders on the District’s budget and the need for long-term solutions. 215-665-1400.
• Philadelphia Student Union: Developing a new school funding strategy – creating peer-to-peer networks of students in southeastern Pennsylvania to train advocates and organizers to work for more state funding for education. 215-546-3290.
• Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia: Working with legislators, business groups and other education advocates to obtain passage of legislation increasing the state share of funding for public schools and closing the gaps between Pennsylvania’s richest and poorest districts. 215-627-7100.
