Smooth moves by fifth grade dancers Donnay Burden and India Thompson helped Russell Byers Charter School take home the gold trophy from the Colors of the Rainbow Competition December 15 at the Merriam Theater. Some 800 Philadelphia fifth graders from Byers and 13 other schools participated in the 10-week pilot semester of Dancing Classrooms Philly (www.dancingclassroomsphilly.org). Children received two classes each week learning how to swing, foxtrot, rumba, merengue, tango, and waltz. The program is designed to help children learn to focus, develop respect for others, and gain confidence. Another set of schools enjoys the program this semester.
